Nicole Kidman's new movie "Birth"--sounds interesting
Nicole Kidman courts controversy with new afterlife drama BirthThe fuss is that Kidman's new movie has set off the usual hysteria whenever anything involving children can be remotely construed as sexual. She probably didn't remember (or didn't know about) the uproar surrounding the publication of Judith Levine's excellent book "Harmful to Minors" a couple of years ago: people are not comfortable when "children" and "sex" occur in the same context.
Though not quite dumfounded, Nicole Kidman is perplexed. She can't quite fathom what all the fuss is about with her new film Birth.
However, in this case I really have to side with Kidman. What apparently happens in the movie is that Kidman's character takes a bath with a 10 year old boy. The catch is that the boy is actually the reincarnated spirit of her long dead husband, who still loves her. She comes to believe this, incredible though it is, and I guess this is the context in which the bath scene takes place.
Kidman goes on to say:
"The filmmakers I'm drawn to -- in this case Jonathan Glazer -- are what I like to call philosophers. They're the idea men and women who are not about sheer entertainment. They are interested in the bigger questions in life and they don't necessarily give you the answers.Based on what I read in the article, I'm inclined to agree with her--I want to see this movie. And, I can't help but be attracted to any film that causes the morals and decency set to burst a blood vessel.
"Birth is a very dangerous film but, at the same time, it's a very beautiful film."
